CBC Sports: CIF Playoffs - First Round
8 November 2007

Winners Play On in the Playoffs

Well, I for one, can't believe it's time for the second round of the central valley CIF playoffs already. Seems like not so long ago we got the bad news about Justin Weber being out for the season, but that was in August. (I'll bet it seems a lot longer than that to Justin) But yessiree here it is November and we are in the second round of the playoffs this week. It's been an exciting year and we've been blessed with some great games and some outstanding play from so many players and teams, and there sure have been some crazy bounces along the way. Edison is a great story this year, managing to stay undefeated all season, especially after dodging that bullet of defeat in the Clovis West game at Sunnyside the night the lights went out. Literally. The Tigers came back from a 14 point deficit in the 4th quarter to tie the game and send it in to overtime as the two teams traded scores an then everything went dark due to Dilbert type administrative malfunction, and the game ended in a 27-27 tie. The Eagles went through some hard times getting adjusted and finding consistencey for a few games after that, but managed to win a co-TRAC championship with Clovis East and Buchanan. Did I say Buchanan? I didn't think they had a chance to do that this year in that conference, but what a great job Coach Mike Vogt and his staff did as the Bears came on strong in the second half, even beating rival Clovis West along the way, and then soundly defeated a good Sanger squad in the first round of the CIF post season. Sanger finished at 7-4 even though they had lost Webber and 10 other starters. Amazing. Another Chuck Shidan award winning sculpture.

You talk about the good, the bad and the ugly, and you are describing the year the Bullard Knights had. They dazzled area fans with 7 straight wins - coming back from a 2-8 record last year - all the way to a number one ranking in the Valley, number 14 in the state, and knocking off Clovis East, Clovis West, Central, and Oakland Tech (47-22 up in Oakland), and were undefeated and on a sweet roll. Then, in the next three weeks, they get trounced by Edison, 35-0, lose to Sanger by a touchdown, and then.....the Knucklehead Factor steps to the plate and the Knights lose some of their very best players for taking the rivalry game, the Battle of Barstow, against Hoover too seriously, and they are out for the season. Who knows how many? That number varried, but suffice to say some key players were gone. It was just an unfortunate thing and the players involved I'm sure would like to "get that pitch back" as they say in baseball sometimes, but their season was over. It had to be very tough on coach Don Arax and his crew after the terrific turnaround job they did this year. Anyway, the depleted Knights managed to pull off a 3-0 victory after being led by a young QB, called up from the JV team, Kerr Taubler, and he did the job for the win in a very unmemorable game. The Knights, on their successes over the bulk of the season, drew a bye in the first round of the playoffs, but this weekend face a very tough and coming on Clovis West team in the second round.

I guess the one matchup that fans are looking at with the most anticpation is the third round game between Clovis West and Edison at Sunnyside on November 23rd and KJEO-TV will be there for that one - if both the Tigers and Eagles win this week vs Liberty of Bakersfield and Bullard respectively.

Our game this week is the second round game, this one in Division Five, which has the Fowler Redcats home against the Caruthers Blue Raiders, the defending Div 5 Valley Champs. It's our first game ever in Fowler and everybody is looking forward to the visit. Fowler has always been a great football town and we've been wanting to televise a game there. The Redcats come in at 11-0 and are the champions of the Southwest Sierra League. Caruthers comes in at 8-3 on the year.
