First Game at Veteran's Memorial Stadium A Stunner

What was supposed to be a light rain that would be gone by late afternoon, a prediction by more than one of our local crack TV weathermen, turned out to be more like a cold, steady rain and many of the participating football players got wet on Friday night around the Valley. Actually it went right along with this wacky Valley gridiron season and this weather wasn't the only surprise on Friday night.

In the first event in the newly named Veteran's Memorial Stadium (formerly Buchanan Stadium, at the BEC), the Buchanan Bears, in a thrilling finish, came from behind to defeat the Clovis West Golden Eagles. Matthew Johnson kicked a solid 22-yard field goal with 1:17 seconds left as the Bears fans went into a frenzy. The game was a hard fought one on both sides, but it was one outstanding defensive series after that put the Bears in line for the upset. The Eagles moved the ball up and down the field, but the Bears tightened up every time the Eagles had an opportunity to score, leaving the team from Teague with just three points in the second half. The huge play in that second half was a shocker when the Bears lined up for a punt on a fourth down and 14, as the blocking back A.J. Caviglia took a direct snap from center and he rolled out and threw a perfect pass to Preston Argenberger, good for 17 yards and a first down. Another huge play was the Henderson pass to Sammy Donald for a two point conversion that tied the game up at 25 and set the stage for the Johnson clutch field goal for the upset. Clovis West took a 22-17 lead into the lockeroom at half-time, but could not finish in the second half for the second straight week. (Last week 15-0 over Central, then got the win at 15-12).

Henderson played big for the Bears. Caviglia played big, Johnson played big. Dustin Graber played big. Argenberger played big. It was a huge win for coach Mike Vogt and the Buchanan team. They now stand at 4-3 and keep a share of the Tri-River lead at 2-0. The Eagles fell to 3-3-1 overall, and 1-2 in the Tri-River. Matt Jelmini ran for 102 yards and got another 50 receiving from Beau Sweeney, who was 12-17 for 194 yards passing (2ints).
