Fowler Redcats on a Big Roll
It’s been a great year for football fans in Fowler. Actually, it usually is a great year for football
fans in Fowler. Win, lose, or draw. That’s because the Fowler fans are solid behind
the young football warriors of Adams Avenue, and have been for many, many years. This year in
particular finds the Redcats still undefeated, at 12-0, and zeroing in on the Division Five
Valley Championship. The last step is the title game against the Bakersfield Christian Eagles,
who put 56 points on the board in their 56-21 victory over Strathmore in their semi-final game.
The game will be played in Fowler’s stadium where the Redcats rolled over the Caruthers Blue Raiders
in the other Division Five semi-final action. Behind the passing, running, and leadership of QB,
Josh Poytress, the running and receiving and defense of Jose Mendez, and the defense of Matthew
Gorella, Shanpreet Sanghera, Matt Cardenas, and Damien DeLeon and a bunch of their friends on the
field and in the stands as well, the Redcats purred all night. The biggest play of the game was
probably turned in by sophomore, Kenny Corona, who, in the last minute of the first half, and after
a nice 25 yard run by the Blue Raider’s Sergio Roman, stole the ball from Roman, and raced 70 yards
to a touchdown. The play made the score 21-6 and certainly stopped the momentum of Caruthers and
instead of the score at half-time being 14-13, which the Blue Raiders had been driving for, it was
21-6 and the momentum definitely back in the paws of the Redcats, and carried all the way through
the second half to the 42-14 final score. So Caruthers’ season ends at 8-4 and Fowler in the the
Valley Championship game and bring a 12-0 season record with them verses Bakersfield Christian,
who come into the game 10-2. As usual, get your tickets for the game in Fowler....early.
By the way, we, Fredcat and I, and the KJEO TV crew, would like to thank
Fowler High School’s, administrators, coaches, players,
student body and their great fans for the warm hospitality bestowed to our staff
at the game. In particular, folks like Dr. John Cruz, Principal Frietas, Scott Griffin,
Coach Jim O’Brien, and Paul Logan for all the help in producing the game. Props out to Randy Hill as well.
Other Notable Scores:
Edison 13, Liberty Bakersfield 9 - Tigers in an unfamiliar role of coming from behind to win it.
Have to play better this week vs Clovis West.
Clovis West 10, Bullard 3 - Another surprise as Bullard, playing with ten sophs in starting
roles, almost pulled off the upset. Two things here to look out for: 1. Can the Eagles comeback
vs Edison, and 2. Take notice - Look out for Bullard next season for sure!
Centennial 42, Buchanan 14 - Bad night for Jake Henderson (4 pics) and the Bears, but still an
admirable season behind them at 7-5, with a co-championship in the TRAC that nobody thought they
would get. Next for the Golden Hawks: the Bakersfield Drillers. Gee thanks Wally. It’s OK, Beav.
Washington Union 35, Delano 24 - Another upset (#6 seed over #3 seed), but with
Ebahn Feathers behind the wheel, anything can happen. 270 all purpose yards, three TD passes,
and one TD run (56 yards), has Fresno St. Bulldog fans jumping up and down and clapping.
Reedley 29, Yosemite 24 - The biggest upset in the playoffs so far. Nico Garcia’s long touchdown
run (62 yards) put it out of reach for the Badgers, who had the previous best upset win of
the playoffs when they dumped the Sunnyside Wildcats in the 1st round, 43-14.
Exeter 26, Kingsburg 24 - The Viking soph sensation Tyler Bray’s 313 yards passing wasn’t
enough as Exeter piled up 329 yards rushing with Cameron Loeffler pitching in with almost
half of those yards (156).
