Central Continues To Roll, 21-12 Over Hoover

Back home, in Vestal, New York, late in the football season, there was always that worry that it might snow and every now and then we'd get 2 or 3 feet or more and they would have to cancel our football game on a Friday night. We would all be totally bummed out when that would happen. Those times were relived on Friday when it was announced that the JV football games in the Fresno area were postponed, and there was a good chance that the varsity games would be canceled as well, due to bad air quality. Yikes. However, the skies cleared up enough to where the powers that be proclaimed , "On with the games", and, except for most of the valley JV players, joy was set back in on the local gridirons. Our KJEO Sports Game of the Week was a good one over at the the perfectly manicured field, (head groundskeeper, Rick Perez) at Sunnyside Stadium, where we were treated to a rough and tumble game between the Grizzlies of Central High and the Patriots of Hoover High.

The first half was all defense and the teams battled to a 0-0 tie as both teams showed they have toughness and grit. For Central, that defense was led by the likes of Shay Owens, Shaquil Villegas, Willie Woods, Josh Tavita, and the kicking game of Fil Navarro. For Hoover, it was Jahari Holder, the Kendrick brothers (Eric and Mychal), Jordan Lett, and Vincent Martinez who led the charge of the Patriots. In the early 3rd quarter, two turnovers quickly put the Patriots down 14-0 on touchdowns by Devron Smith and one more on a 42 yard interception TD by Tavita. There was no quit in the Patriots however, and the game wasn't settled until late in the 4th quarter when Villegas made an outstanding catch intercepting a Holder pass.

It was an entertaining game orchestrated by two well coached teams, both with plenty of talent and interesting offensive schemes. These teams of Messers Wayne Koligian and Pat Plummer are fun to watch as they provide a lot of talent and no quit spirit. Both teams also have a lot of two way players, but the game was fought hard all the way.

Our players of the game, although there were many that could have been picked, were Rakim Dawkins for Central, and Mychal Kendricks for Hoover.
