The Year of the Injuries

The multi-team scrimmage, put on by Fresno State coach Pat Hill, in August this past summer, was a treat for fans of Valley high school football. Fred Clark and I were there watching and enjoying the talented teams and players as they were sharpening their skills and timing in great anticipation of the upcoming season. Lots of promise for a 2007 season that was going to be one of the best high school years in memory, teamwise and individual wise. It was fun to watch and anticipate. Then, despite a beautiful blue sky day on the Fresno State practice field, among all that positive vibe, some bad news came over the field like a big ole dark storm cloud.

"Did ya hear? Justin Weber blew out his knee last night up at the Stanford combine in Palo Alto! He is out for the season." We felt so bad for Justin, and for the Sanger Apaches. His senior year was one that fans of the game were really looking forward to. He had already made his presence known not only in Sanger, and in the County Metro AC, but to football fans all over the Valley. He was about to rewrite the record books as an MVP running back for the Apaches, but maybe the best outputs were as a Player of the Year as a safety, and as the heart of the Sanger defense. The team would have to go the season without their three year all-star.

Fortunately for Sanger, the Chuck Shidan led Apaches never give up. Unfortunately for Sanger, it was only the beginning of a horrifying list of injuries to key players that would turn what was going to possibly be one of the greatest years ever for them, to where they would eventually lose 10 of their talented starters to various injuries, all but destroying their chances to grab another Valley Title and beyond. The injury list would keep a MASH unit busy as the weeks in the preseason unfolded: Weber, Alvarado, Morales, Neves, Gonzales, and Torrejos, all out for the season. That's an all-star team right there, but then another all-star, Mario Navarette, breaks his leg and is out for half the season, and the sick bay list goes on: Hingano, Garza, and the second Aaron Gonzales are hurt. Unbelievable. Tough stuff, true, but six games into the season, Coach Shidan and his staff have led the team to a 4-2 record and looking forward to the challenge of the mighty CMAC.

It's not just Sanger who is hurting this year. Bullard had to face the season without the multitalented Chris Nelson, while Clovis West had to go their first five games without Matt Jelmini, and 5 other starters, Central had to go on without the multitalented Shay Owens, and Clovis' QB Joe Perez went down, and on and on. Football is a tough game and there are going to be injuries, but this year it just seems there have been so many key players that have got hurt, especially in Sanger. As the old saying goes, "That's the way the pickle squirts." and it's true, you have to adjust, but this year has been frustrating.
