CBC Sports: Week 4
Clovis North High School, the latest new school on the Clovis Unified map,
put 46 points up on the scoreboard, to Fresno High's 19 at the BEC at
Buchanan. This was a battle of freshman teams and it was very entertaining
right from the start as the Warriors Roberto Hawkins, on the third play of
the game, took a handoff and cutting to the outside and finding a lane,
sprinted to a 73 yard touchdown run. Then it was the Broncos turn as our
player of the game award winner, quarterback, Chris Mariscal, led Clovis
North to 46 points with a good all around offensive effort. The Broncos also
got good games from Mike Tittle, Aaron Mojarras, Taylor Eaton, Zach Boman,
and a host of others, who in just two years, when they are juniors, are
going to be playing at the varsity level in the tough County/Metro AC. The
coaching staff has a number of familiar faces with Tim Simons as head coach,
along with Larry Kellom, Jim Motchley, and others in the mix. Former Fresno
City and State MVP running back from the 1970's, Jeff Johnson is at the helm
of this Warrior Frosh team and they got good outings from QB Juan Sanchez,
Nolan Freeman, Isais Torres, and Hawkins, who was our player of the game for
Fresno High. A nice crowd, more than you would expect to see at a freshman
game, was on hand on a beautiful afternoon at the BEC, as Clovis North High
School begins it's first year of existence.
Our KJEO TV varsity game of the week was a dandy. We are always happy to go
out to Tom Flores Stadium in Sanger, because it's a great facility, the fans
are awesome, the administrators are helpful and positive, and you are always
going to get a great game from the Chuck Shidan coached Apaches. The cherry
on the top was the fact that is was a rivalry game between the Clovis High
Cougars and the Sanger High Apaches. In this game, the 59th meeting between
the two schools, Sanger won, 17 - 14, on a 28 yard field goal by Chris Zumwalt, on the
last play of the game.
The Apaches had built up a comfortable lead led by Eric Flores' two
electrifying touchdowns, one on a 65 yard pass play from QB David Turner,
and the other on a 90 yard run with an interception return. The Cougars,
down by 14 points in the second half, were led by first time starting
quarterback, sophomore, Josh Garrett, who threw for 307 yards and ran for
another 41 yards rushing. Brett Sanchez also had a great game for Clovis
while doing just about everything: fullback on offense (90 yards rushing),
playing tough defense and handing all the kicking chores. Clovis came all
the way back to tie the score and had a chance to take the lead late in the
fourth quarter, but a field goal attempt was blocked by the Apaches. Sanger
then put on a great drive in the last minute and 40 seconds, with key passes
to Flores and runs by Michael Torrejos and Adam Galvan, that led to the
winning field goal by Zumwalt. An absolutely terrific football crowd, with
both sides of the field creating loud, fever pitch backing for their teams,
made the contest a great one.
Our players of the game? Eric Flores for the Apaches, and Jeff Garrett from
the Cougars. Clovis High, under the coaching of Jerry Campbell, is in our
opinion, the best 0-4 team in California. Sanger improved to 3-1 on the
year. Both teams are definitely going to have to be reckoned with in their
respective leagues, the Tri-River for the Cougars and the CMAC for the
Apaches.
This week coming up, we have a battle of unbeatens on KJEO. Bullard and
Central are both looking very good with perfect 4-0 records. Bullard's
Knights are coming off the big 28-25 win at Clovis West, while the Grizzlies
of Central knocked off an improved Sunnyside team, 13-7.
